SmokingJacket Shows What Smoking Does to Your Lungs

June 18th, 2007 · No Comments

Smoke Jacket

The concept is noble but the actual effect grosses me out. Of course I don’t smoke so I might be biased. I don’t really believe though that even hardcore smokers won’t get a little queasy with the SmokingJacket.

The SmokingJacket which is designed by Fiona Carswell, a graduate of the Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP) at New York University and a User Interface Engineer for Apple, is not likely to become a product that Apple will be marketing any time soon (or ever) but is a result of a personal project. The project’s aim is to “explore reflective design as it relates to the body, behavioral choices, and information displays.” Whatever that means, the result is as interesting as it is gross.

The all-white jacket itself looks really cool (if you can ignore the lungs part). Once the smoker wearing it starts to puff on the cigarette the clear lungs begin to darken as the exhaled smoke fills it up. It would be interesting to use this to educate kids although they might end more fascinated than grossed out. The SmokingJacket is not for mass production though you can contact FIona Carswell at her email address if you feel like getting one.

Other equally weird and fascinating projects by Fiona Carswell are Mod Jewels, a doorknob vase (this is something that I think can work), Clutch (thermal gloves that requires you to hold hands with some for eat to start heating up your hands), and stickable moles (so you can indicate where you have moles under your clothing).
