Another day, another sexy kick-ass UMPC. This time from EB (formerly Elektrobit). It’s one of the few UMPS that features Intel’s new Menlow platform, the silicon platform developed purely for the UMPC space. The MIMD is actually a hardware platform, and EB’s positioning is that it’s a reference hardware that is being offered under a license to customers. They will help Original Device Manufactures (ODM) develop their own customized version of the MIMD.
On the features side, it sports a high resolution 4.8” lcd, WiFi and Bluetooth capability, Mobile Wimax and HSPA connectivity, its own Navigation suite and an integrated GPS, Linux OS, Micro USB, micro SD Memory card, 3.5 mm stereo headset and a full QWERTY keyboard.
Based on the pictures so far, this looks to be a sexy UMPC device that we’ll surely don’t mind carrying around. The form factor is similar to the Sony UMPC, with a sliding screen thate exposes the full QWERTY keyboard.
This Linux distribution on this UMPC will probably be one that will come out of the Intel Mobile Internet Device Innovation Alliance (MIDIA) a partnership with hardware manufacturers (as of IDF announcement: Asustek, BenQ, Compal Electronics, High Tech Computer, Quanta Computer, and Elektrobit). That aims to develop a $500 device capable of accessing the Internet from any location. Ubuntu, the current darling of consumer Linux, recently joined the alliance. It’s experience, focse and expertise in desktop Linux will help a lot in creating the software platform for these Mobile Internet Devices
