Coolest Low Tech Clocks by Clayton Boyer

Clayton Boyer

Much exposure to all things high tech makes you appreciate “simpler” inventions every now and then. Clayton Boyer’s clocks, are some of the most “low tech” clocks you will see. Most of them don’t even make use of gears and the material used are mostly organic - meaning wood, fiber, stones, and more wood. The use of metal is always kept to a minimum and the over all effect is quite striking.

A visit to Clayton Boyer’s site will give you a glimpse of his gallery of clocks. Gallery is the right term because the clocks look more like artwork than functional devices. And functional they are. Though it might surprise you these clocks are as precise as the clocks you own though it might take some long explaining if you as the creator how it was made. Take the clock below as an example. Boyer calls it the Moon Phase Clock and it shows not only the time in hours and minutes but has a second hand, gives you the date, and as the name suggests the phases of the moon. The really cool thing about this clock is that it does not use any gears at all but relies solely on levers and pulleys to function.

For those interested you can order a clock at the Clayton Boyer’s website. You’d better not be in a hurry though because they don’t always ship the next day but depending on his work’s availability.
